Our Favorite Swimming Spots Around Town
The clear waters of Canandaigua Lake are what makes our corner of the world so special. A refreshing dip off the shore, thrilling jump off a boat into the deep blue waves, or a day spent kayaking around and discovering new hidden spots are just a few of our favorite ways to make the most of the warm weather months in the Finger Lakes. The lake is what everyday life at The Lake House revolves around—from the moment you wake up to the glowing sunsets over the waves. If you’re staying with us for a while and want to explore further afield, the surrounding area is full of picturesque swimming spots and small beaches. Here’s a few of our favorites.
Kershaw Park
An easy walk from The Lake House property, this 9-acre park has tables for picnicking and a spacious swimming area with views of the whole of Canandaigua Lake on the horizon. The open air gazebo is one of our favorite spots to sit with an ice cream cone.
Butler Beach
This quiet, intimate swimming spot is a favorite among locals. A short drive from The Lake House. There’s no sand—instead, you can lay out on the grass before taking a dip from one of the ladders that lead down to the lake.
Onanda State Park
The largest park in Canandaigua, the name Onanda comes from the indigenous word for pine tree, the stately trees that ring the lakefront. There’s an interesting history here—originally founded in 1919 as a YWCA camp, the park is now a hub of year-round activities, from hiking and swimming to snowshoeing. Explore the peaceful forest trails before taking a dive into the wide swimming area.
Atwater Meadows
Secluded and peaceful, the big draw of this rustic waterfront park are the incredible views of Squaw Island. Named because it served as a refuge for Seneca women and children during the 1700s. One of the smallest protected nature areas in the state, the island’s bright green foliage is a must-see while you’re in town. If you’re looking for off-the-beaten-path lake access, this is the spot.
